A Study on Wanted Number and Sex Composition of Children in a Section of Busan, Korea


Abstract
1. The Purpose
We have investigated the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of a sample of married women to determine preference for number and sex of children in a section of Busan, Korea based on Coombs preference scale test.
This study has the following study objectives
1) To find out about preference patterns in relation to number and sex of children wanted, based on the Coomb¢¥s preference scale.
2) To examine the association between demographic, socio-economic chracteristics and preference patterns for numberand sex of children.
3) To examine the association between preference for number and sex of children.
2. The method .
The study population defined and selected included all the eligible women(N=291) aged 2049 who are living with their spouses in the selected area of Amidong, Busan, Korea.
Data for the present analysis obtained by means of the research instrument used by Yonsei Unive rsity in a study of health needs in a specipic community. Statistical analysis of the above data was done using the X¢¥-test.
3. The Results
1) The majority of the population had no more than primary school education and more than half of them had no religion.
2) The number bias reveals a high degree of positive association between age and ideal number of children.
3) The number preference patterns showed no significant association between education, occupation and religion.
4) There was positive association between age grouping and sex and number preference patterns among~+women in the 30-39 and 40-49 age groups, but not in the 20-29 age group.
